The 5th grade students at our local elementary school, Mills Lawn, had a fabulous time preparing the materials to use for their mosaic project.  To break up the ceramic material, donated plates, bowls and pots, they jumped on and hammered on the items to break them into

manageable pieces.  As you can see from the photos, they had a fabulous time!

Elemetary School Art Residency

by admin on April 3, 2012

A few months ago I contacted the art teacher at our local elementary school, Mills Lawn, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, to see if she wanted me to do an mosaic art residency with some of her students.  She started to laugh.  It turns out that one of the PTO parents just the evening before had mentioned that she was going to find the school a mosaic artist to mosaic the ugly wooden sign and raised bed outside the entrance to the building.  Then I called.  Voila!

The teacher and I met and discussed.  She decided the best group to work with would be the two 5th grade classes and the one blended 4/5 class.  We met with teachers, put together a plan and the project was born.

As of the last week of March, 2012, I have met with each group, given them a slide show introduction to mosiac styles, history and techniques and, most fun, we have smashed tons of old dishes, bowls, and various other ceramic objects for our project.

The students are now on Spring Break as I write this, but the kids will be bringing their own materials to contribute to the project.  We have already collected legos and some jewelry to be part of the multimedia project.

Two amazing volunteers from the community are reconstructing the raised bed under the sign and cladding the sign and raised bed in cement board so that we have an appropriate surface to mosaic.

The art teacher has designed a fun font for the sign and I have ordered bright, reflective white marbles for the writing on the front of the sign.

Here is the “before” photo of how the sign looked before we started mosaicing it.

Spirit and Art

January 23, 2012

There has always been a connection between emotion and art; and spirit and art.  Museums and churches are filled with such works. But what I find most inspiring is the connection between the holy within artist and how that is expressed in art.  That is why I do much of what I do: to celebrate the holy [...]

This month, October, is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  I made this piece thinking I wanted to do something positive with it but didn’t quite know what until today. I was working out at our Yellow Springs Curves, as is my habit, and started talking to the owner, Lynn Hardman, about the piece and my desire to do a [...]

Peifer Farms is a wonderful farm market outside Yellow Springs, Ohio. They have orchards and grow the most amazing apples as well as tomatoes, zucchini and super-sweet corn. I shop there often and have gotten friendly with the manager. The other day, she asked me about my mosaics and said she was interested in carrying [...]

Flower Pots!

September 2, 2011

A couple of local stores in Yellow Springs have asked me to make some mixed media mosaic flower pots for them. Yellow Springs Village Greenery in King’s Yard sells specialty houseplants. Owner Mitch George is the most knowledgeable plant maven I’ve ever met, and as a former florist and plant maven myself, that’s saying something! [...]

Salon Mirror

August 11, 2011

Recently, a salon owner of my acquaintance opened a new salon in Beavercreek, Ohio and wanted me to make a mirror for her salon bathroom to spruce it up. The salon is mostly black and white with pale gray walls and shocks of hot pink. The bathroom–well, let’s just say it really, really needed that [...]
