A few months ago I contacted the art teacher at our local elementary school, Mills Lawn, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, to see if she wanted me to do an mosaic art residency with some of her students. She started to laugh. It turns out that one of the PTO parents just the evening before had mentioned that she was going to find the school a mosaic artist to mosaic the ugly wooden sign and raised bed outside the entrance to the building. Then I called. Voila!
The teacher and I met and discussed. She decided the best group to work with would be the two 5th grade classes and the one blended 4/5 class. We met with teachers, put together a plan and the project was born.
As of the last week of March, 2012, I have met with each group, given them a slide show introduction to mosiac styles, history and techniques and, most fun, we have smashed tons of old dishes, bowls, and various other ceramic objects for our project.
The students are now on Spring Break as I write this, but the kids will be bringing their own materials to contribute to the project. We have already collected legos and some jewelry to be part of the multimedia project.
Two amazing volunteers from the community are reconstructing the raised bed under the sign and cladding the sign and raised bed in cement board so that we have an appropriate surface to mosaic.
The art teacher has designed a fun font for the sign and I have ordered bright, reflective white marbles for the writing on the front of the sign.
Here is the “before” photo of how the sign looked before we started mosaicing it.
